Dr. David Jayne, respected
European researcher, joins CSSA Advisory Board
The CSSA is happy to announce that Dr. David
Jayne has accepted our invitation to serve on the CSSA Medical Advisory
Board. We are especially pleased to have Dr. Jayne on board as he
has a keen interest in multi center international research efforts.
We at the CSSA recognize the importance of multi center studies
with rare diseases such as CSS because of the limited availibility
of patient populations to enroll in studies.Dr Jayne became involved
with other European vasculitis researchers and led the development
of the European Vasculitis Study Group (EUVAS) with Niels Rasmussen
of Copenhagen in 1993. The European Vasculitis Study Group has developed
a consensus approach to the treatment of vasculitis and has aimed
to harmonize and optimize current therapy by a series of multi center
randomized controlled trials. More information about the activities
of the EUVAS, including current trials and links to patient organizations,
can be found at http://www.vasculitis.org/.
For a list of EUVAS collaborators around the world please follow
this link: http://www.vasculitis.org/parlist.htm.
In addition to founding the EUVAS, Dr Jayne is a member of the VCRC
and has also collaborated on research with Japanese medical specialists.
Dr Jayne will be one of the speakers at the Vasculitis Foundation
Symposium in July in Baltimore and wlll be happy to meet with CSS
members attending this event.
Dr. David Jayne
Dr. David Jayne is a consultant in nephrology and vasculitis at
the Department of Clinical Medicine, Addenbrooke's Hospital, University
of Cambridge, UK. He has been researching into vasculitis since
1987 and has written and co-authored many articles pertaining to
vasculitis, some of which are referenced at the end of this article.
Following is information about his career:
David R W Jayne, born January 19th, 1957, studied at the the University
of Cambridge, and St Thomas' Hospital Medical School in London.
After qualification as a medical practitioner in 1981, he trained
in general medicine at St Mary's Hospital and the National Heart
Hospital in London. His renal training began at St Thomas' Hospital
and then he joined the research group of Professor Keith Peters
at the Hammersmith Hosiptal in 1987. His MD thesis was supervised
by Dr Martin Lockwood at the University of Cambridge and focused
on the development of ANCA assays and investigations into the regulation
of ANCA antibodies by the immune system. In 1992-1993 he spent one
year as a clinical fellow in nephrology at Harvard Medical School
working at the Beth Israel and New England Deaconess Hospitals.
During this early 1990s he became involved with other European vasculitis
researchers and from 1993 with Niels Rasmussen of Copenhagen led
the development of the European Vasculitis Study Group (EUVAS).
In 1995 he was appointed a Senior Lecturer in nephrology at St George's
and St Helier Hospitals in London and in 2001 was appointed to his
current post back in Cambridge. He now directs a large, multidisciplinary
clinical service at Addenbrooke's Hospital that concentrates on
vasculitis and lupus receiving national referrals of patients with
difficult to manage disease. He also directs a clinical research
group in Cambridge conducting clinical trials and clinical epidemiological
studies into vasculitis and lupus and has formed strong links with
a translational research programme with laboratory scientists in
Cambridge. In addition to working with EUVAS, he is a member of
the Vasculitis Collaborative Research Consortium (VCRC) and has
developed joint studies with a Japanese network of vasculitis physicians.
Particular research interests involve the early clinical evaluation
of new therapies in vasculitis and lupus and the development of
disease assessment tools. He has written many articles on those
subjects in international peer-reviewed journals, gives lectures
as an invited speaker on his research topics on all major international
meetings, and is editorial board member of several journals in clinical
immunology and nephrology.
