The Churg Strauss Syndrome Association Secures
Official Nonprofit Status.

The Churg Strauss Syndrome Association’s application for 510(c)(3) status was approved on June 20, 2005 with tax exempt status retroactive to December 20, 2004.

This was a very important achievement as it allows benefactors to deduct donations as charitable contributions to the fullest extent of IRS law. In addition, tax exempt status gives the CSSA an advantage in applying for grants and other kinds of funding. Finally, being an official nonprofit organization gives us validity and standing within both the patient advocacy groups and medical institutions.

Because the CSSA could not afford legal council, we had to do our own research about how to form a corporation and then how to successfully apply for nonprofit status. John Booros, of the Takayasu's Arteritis Research Association (TARA), had previously successfully received 501(c)(30 status without legal council and generously shared all that he knew of the process. In addition, long time friend and supporter Robert Larard of the UK, a member of the CSSISG message board and a brilliant legal mind, was able to help us make sense of all the legalese which made the task a lot less daunting. The CSSA owes both Robert and John much gratitude and many, many thanks.
